Coral City | GOMMAdesign + ITA Project

CORAL CITY: GOMMAdesign takes inspiration from corals to design a self-sustaining and disaster-resistant eco-village in the Philippines

Our proposal wants to prove that architecture and urban planning can design sustainable cities only if they start from different and more responsible values. A conscientious development is the main challenge of our generation, the only way to achieve a sustainable world.

GOMMAdesign

CORAL CITY, a self-sustaining and disaster-resistant eco-village in the Philippines, designed by GOMMAdesign (in partnership with ITA Project), was chosen among almost 300 entries from all over the world and awarded with the special ENERGY AWARD in DAtE – Design Against the Elements international competition.

Design Against the Elements was a global architectural design competition meant to find a solution to the problems presented by climate change. The project aimed to draw together the most innovative minds in the fields of architecture, design, and urban planning to develop sustainable and disaster-resistant housing for communities in tropical urban settings. The winning design will be built as a prototype disaster-resistant and livable eco-village in Quezon City, while all the entries will be compiled into an encyclopedia of architectural solutions that will be implemented for sustainable, environment-friendly civil works.

Starting from the idea that a conscientious development is the main challenge of our generation and that natural structures could provide the best role-models and inspirations to design new sustainable communities, GOMMAdesign‘s project was inspired by corals, self-organizing living systems which are highly capable of reacting and smoothly adapting to changes and external influences.

The project master plan aims to stimulate and guarantee social relations between tenants even in case of natural disasters, heavy rains and floods, while being at the same time a cutting-edge eco-sustainable and green design. Many technologies and strategies where implemented for this purpose, most of them inspired by biomimetic principles and energy-saving considerations. In details:

  • Buildings have a proper ring-like shape which allows optimal structural performances in relation to stresses caused by earthquakes and typhoons.
  • Cells are permeable and perforated. This minimizes the opposition of buildings to strong winds and allows them to pass through and flow away from the inner courtyards, which will promote natural and cross ventilation and will help reducing inner temperature.
  • Precipitations are collected and drained out through an interconnected system of canals, in order to minimize the effects of heavy rains and flood and re-use water for domestic and public use.
  • Buildings and main distribution paths are detached from the ground, on piles, in order to offer a safe and enjoyable environment even in case of massive flooding.
  • Recycled and local materials (bamboo) will be used.

The Shanghai Expo 2010 has opened its doors, and we start to see how the pavilions evolved from the previews we saw during design/construction phases at ArchDaily, to become a showcase of the current status of architecture from around the world.

The Denmark Pavilion was one of the first ones we presented you, almost a year ago. The project, designed by BIG with ARUP and 2+1, was interesting not only from an architectural and structural point of view, but also for the danish spirit it represents.

Basically, the pavilion is a loop on which visitors ride around on one of the 1,500 bikes available at the entrance, a chance to experience the Danish urban way. At the center of the pavilion there’s a pool with fresh water from Copenhagen’s harbor (one of the most clean in the world), on which visitors can even swim.

At the center of the pool you will find The Little Mermaid, a statue that has become a symbol for Denmark. And this time, it will be moved temporarily to . In Bjarke Ingels words “it is considerably more resource efficient moving The Little Mermaid to , than moving 1.3 billion Chinese to Copenhagen”.

After the break, more images of the completed pavilion by arch photographer Iwan Baan, including Bjarke Ingels himself riding a bike on the circular loop:

The pavilion is a monolithic structure in white painted steel which keeps it cool during the Shanghai summer sun due to its heat-reflecting characteristics. The roof is covered with a light blue surfacing texture, known from Danish cycle paths. Inside, the floor is covered with light epoxy and also features the blue cycle path where the bikes pass through the building. The steel of the facade is perforated in a pattern that reflects the actual structural stresses that the pavilion is experiencing making it a 1:1 stress test.

“Sustainability is often misunderstood as the neo-protestant notion “that it has to hurt in order to do good”. “You’re not supposed to take long warm showers – because wasting all that water is not good for the environment” or “you’re not supposed to fly on holidays – because airtraffic is bad for the environment”. Gradually we all get the feeling that sustainable life simply is less fun than normal life. If sustainable designs are to become competitive it can not be for purely moral or political reasons – they have to be more attractive and desirable than the non-sustainable alternative. With the Danish Pavilion we have attempted to consolidate a handful of real experiences of how a sustainable city – such as Copenhagen – can in fact increase the quality of life”,

- Bjarke Ingels

Australian architectural practice NH Architecture has completed the 574 Swan Street mixed use building located in the inner Melbourne suburb of Richmond. It is a building to house a restaurant and two retail outlets at ground level and two floors of office accommodation above.

+ Project description courtesy of NH Architecture

574 Swan Street is a small mixed use building sited at the gateway to a new office park in the inner Melbourne suburb of Richmond. Its position on the site allows picturesque views across the Yarra River parklands as well as the city skyline to the north-west.

The building program includes a restaurant and two retail outlets at ground level and two floors of office accommodation above. The client / building owner occupies some of this office space.

The building has an atypical plan form for office accommodation. This partially evolved via negotiation through a series of conflicting planning setbacks. However, it was more about arriving at a resilient plan form that allowed the building not to be dependent on complex architectural detailing for its visual strength.
